The seven-song Aviation Blondes debut LP was contemporary pop-rock music, and not the garage rock that you’d expect from the Get Hip label. More like 10,000 Maniacs during their ’80s/early ’90s alternative-rock years.
Edge of Forever sounded like something you might possibly hear on a daring, let’s-open-up-the-format-a-tiny-bit Top 40 station. “The Stranger In You,” for instance, could have been a hit on American radio back then.
Just to give you an idea of what Aviation Blondes sound like, lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Steve Morrison has a Pete Townshend-edged guitar approach for the most part, while vocalist Lexi Rebert delivers those Natalie Merchant-like vocals.
“Catch and Release” and “Pretend” best represented their pop-rock vibe. This type of music wasn’t my cup of tea, but hey it may be one of yours.
