Ken Sharp is a very busy man, dividing his time between making music and authoring books, articles and liner notes on his favorite performers.
Since 1994, the Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and multi-dimensional instrumentalist has issued several well-received albums, along with a collection of equally lauded singles.
While power pop may be Sharp’s preferred cup of tea, he has flirted with other genres here and there. For example, his last studio album Miniatures, which arrived in the spring of 2021, was cut from an orchestral-pop cloth, dipped in the vein of the Left Banke and the early Bee Gees.
Sharp’s most recent effort – a single called “Hellcat” – returns to his roots. Released on the Jet Fighter label, the intoxicating tune is about a wild woman whose pockets are filled with cash and her nose is full of blow.
Strutting rhythms, solidified by saucy vocals and a hard-and-hooky riff that goes boing boing, stir up fond memories of the Sweet in all their decadent splendor. Tight and sexy, “Hellcat” is also shaped by a jangling tambourine and the zippy hum of a synthesizer.
Ken Sharp never seems to run out of great ideas, and “Hellcat” certainly validates his commitment to creating only the best when it comes to rocking power pop.
