Trombonist William Carn and saxophonist Tara Davidson formed the unique collaborative project the Carn Davidson 9 at the beginning of 2010 and nearly a dozen years later, the flame is still burning strong. The History of Us is going to be their third long player to come out of this fruitful collaboration, a collection of many of Canada’s finest ensemble musicians and pretty good soloists to boot.
The video debuting at the top takes us on a whirlwind tour of Carn Davidson 9’s new album and the driving force behind it. As Davidson describes this most personal project, “it’s about family and identity.” Comprised of one suite a piece from Carn and Davidson, each drew inspiration from the respective clans that this husband-and-wife team had come from.
As the name implies, this is a nine-piece band, but with seven horns backed by bass and drums, one that lacks a single chordal instrument. However, Carn and Davison nimbly use all the horns at their disposal to present innumerable possible combinations of brass and woodwinds to create chords from as little as two up to the full complement of seven.
Their compositions are euphonious and elegantly arranged to exploit those combinations to the fullest. It’s why The History of Us is yet another Carn Davidson 9 album to look forward to.
The History of Us will release on November 26, 2021 from Three Pines Records.
