For the past year or so, Dan Markell has been banging out one great single after another.
The Southern California-based singer, songwriter and multi-diversified instrumentalist’s recent offering, “Carried Away” from Fermada Nowhere Music, produces a portrait of a self-absorbed individual who craves attention, thinks they know everything and always has to be the star of the show.
Critical barbs aside, “Carried Away” frolics to a peppy pace stitched of tingling guitars, energetic melodies and incisive brass arrangements. Markell’s hooky and polished vocals are powered with radio-ready pop instincts in the vein of artists like Squeeze and the Smithereens. A funky fringe, a fizzing break and a zingy chorus register as further inviting ingredients installed in the cut.
If “Carried Away” is your introduction to the music of Dan Markell, you will definitely be inclined to investigate his prior releases. Apart from a wave of previously mentioned winning singles, there’s two full-length albums – Big Ideas and Eleven Shades of Dan Markell – that are belted tight with his signature brand of consciously-composed pop rock sounds.
