Signing up with a larger label like the Concord Music Group hadn’t broken the Virginia quintet Butcher Brown’s stride and only about nine months out from their highly lauded Concord debut #KingButch is coming forth an EP Encore on June 4, 2021.
Ahead of that extended player is an advance cut from it that they call “Truck Fump.” It’s no harder to figure out what they’re saying in the title than it is to understand what “fuster cluck” is code for. But as it always is with Butcher Brown, there’s a strong message embedded in their brand of instrumental music that remembers what was so much fun about fusion jazz back when it was handmade, funky and not so self-serious.
The song is a satisfying mixture of a mid-tempo groove with jazzy chords, anchored by Andrew Randazzo’s fuzzy bass line. MC Marcus ‘Tennishu’ Tenney’s sax excursion in the middle of the song is the highlight, licks that strike the right balance between passion and taste.
