Yes has occasionally recycled bits of material or whole songs from members’ previous solo work for inclusion on an officially released band album. The version of “From the Turn of a Card” found on 2019’s From a Page represents one of the more successful recreations of Yes solo work.
This update actually predates the 2013 version of the song which appears on Oliver Wakeman and Gordon Giltrap’s Ravens & Lullabies album. The basic song structure was created by Wakeman during the sessions which led to 2011’s Fly From Here album, but the song was not completed until Wakeman honed the song for the duet album with Giltrap.
Confused?
What isn’t confusing is how Beniot David’s lead vocal in tandem with the Yes choir elevates the song. Wakeman also recorded a more expressive piano backing, which distinguishes the Yes version even more.
“From the Turn of a Card” is yet another fine addition to the Yes canon, and a wonderful timepiece celebrating Oliver Wakeman and Benoit David.
