“Hour of Need,” with additional keyboard arrangements and keyboard parts by Oliver Wakeman, offers one of the biggest differences between 2011’s Fly From Here and Yes’ Trevor Horn-sung rerelease, titled Fly From Here: Return Trip. “Don’t Take No For an Answer” takes things a bit further with an entirely new song.
The Steve Howe composition incorporates his signature finger-picked acoustic style with a prominent Chris Squire bass melody. “Don’t Take No For an Answer” isn’t helped, however, by an undistinguished keyboard sound from current Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes or stalwart Alan White’s equally conventional drum part.
Howe’s vocal seems perfectly fitting, if the song were on one of his solo albums. It feels out of place on a proper Yes project. Additionally, Howe’s lyrics aren’t well supported by the underwhelming vocal performance.
Toward the end of “Don’t Take No For an Answer,” Howe’s electric guitar adds a bit of a spark, but I would not recommend buying Yes’ Fly From Here: The Return Trip just for this song.
