Jeff Coffey has released another jewel from the treasure trove that is his new album, Origins: Singers and Songs that Made Me.
The former Chicago singer and bassist, now with ex-Eagles star Don Felder, tackles the Kenny Loggins classic “This Is It” with an all-out embrace of the formidable original vocal challenges laid out by Loggins and co-writer/backing vocalist Michael McDonald. The result is as you would expect for someone of Coffey’s skillset, stunning.
Coffey doesn’t stray too far from Loggins’ original arrangement. Still, the inclusion of Chris Rodriquez (who had one of the best albums of 2019), drum superstar and former Bus No. 2 ally Tris Imboden from Chicago, and multiple Grammy award-winning producer and Steely Dan contributor Michael Omartian make this cover something to seek out and treasure.
Origins may not feature hoped-for Jeff Coffey originals but, as his version of “This Is It” proves, it might just be the next best thing.
