Toto’s remake of “Living For the City,” the Stevie Wonder classic from his 1973 masterpiece Innervisions, is yet another bold move.
Bobby Kimball delivers another fantastic vocal. Simon Phillips’ engineering, with his use of loops, works well to update but never overshadow the lyrical content. Always the jack of all trades on the drums, Phillips may well be the MVP of 2002’s Through the Looking Glass, given how he created a funky yet rocking track.
Of course, it helps to have the distorted and crunchy Steve Lukather guitar track, and equally funky David Paich piano elements. And if you know anything about Toto, you know that they didn’t go for a safe route.
