Toto, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from ‘Through the Looking Glass’ (2002): Toto Tuesdays

Steve Lukather wears his love of the Beatles on his sleeve. So, when Toto headed into the studio to record an album of the music that influenced them, it was inevitable that a Beatles track would be included.

And being a guitarist, Lukather of course chose “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” He was on it like a moth to a flame.

Covers albums are often considered “filler,” to either fulfill contractual obligations or to buy some time between albums. Not here: Steve Lukather’s love of the Beatles shines through on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” – and he holds nothing back.

His guitar solo, in particular, is haunting and beautiful. The hairs on the back of my neck rose to full attention the first time I heard it.

Say what you will about the rest of the material on Toto’s Through the Looking Glass, but there is nothing phoned in or half-assed about Lukather’s vocal or guitar performance. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is beautiful, and stands as the ultimate sign of respect for Steve Lukather’s musical heroes.
