Brimming with optimism and positivity, Yes’ “To Be Alive (Hep Yadda)” is more than its lyrical parts.
Chris Squire provides a fascinating fretless bass part that reminds us why he was the master of the instrument. His partner in rhythm makes it clear that he’s perhaps the utility player of the band: Alan White makes what would be a standard, middle-of-the-road rocker come alive with his ride-cymbal work and dexterity around his snare.
Igor Khoroshev continues to add unique and imaginative keyboard parts which fit perfectly with the electric guitar parts of Billy Sherwood. Steve Howe contributes multiple layers of electric guitar and steel passages.
Bruce Fairbairn’s production on “To Be Alive (Hep Yadda),” as elsewhere on 1999’s The Ladder, ties this musical goodness with another strong Jon Anderson vocal, and that’s matched by the aforementioned lyrical theme.
This Yes deep cut would’ve been a great live addition to the recently concluded 1000 Hands tour.
