Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra combines both disco and Brazilian influences. So, count me in.
Of course, this cool musical recipe is no guarantee that “Give It to Me” – the second single from Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra’s second album, Black Sun – would be any good. Luckily, this single is very good.
“Give It to Me,” which proceeds the album’s April 20, 2018, release date, combines an infectious 4/4 back beat with touches of Brazilian-infused Fender Rhodes, acoustic/electronic percussion, and funky bass. Part of the song’s charm is its reliance on good-old fashioned playing and arrangement.
The multitracked guitars are funky and inspired and the bass reminds me of a time when a four-string electric bass not only provided the low-end but also a a propulsive heart beat. The plethora of analog-sounding synthesizers is another authentic touch, as is the healthy dose of woodwinds from Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra, which was started in 2008 by Far Out label founder Joe Davis with producers David Brinkworth and Daniel “Venom” Maunick.
They’ve come up with some tasty stuff, whether you remember the heyday of disco or not.
