Earlier this year, Something Else! mentioned the band Chicago’s return to recording. Now, we have what we hope is one of the many fruits of their labors, the single, “Something’s Coming, I Know.”
This track, produced by Robert Lamm’s guitarist Hank Linderman and written by Lamm and America member Gerry Beckley hints of Lamm’s solo work on Subtlety and Passion as well as their last official studio release, Chicago XXX. Unlike the aforementioned Chicago recording, Lamm, not Jason Scheff takes the initiative, handling the arrangements with Linderman and providing the sketches for the horn arrangement. The result is a contemporary yet distinctive Chicago sound. Lamm continues to reemerge as a vocalist. He took the lead on the first single from XXX and here sounds as fresh as he did on the Chicago Transit Authority album.
The trademark horn section is prominently featured perhaps with one of the most aggressive charts in the last 30 years (outside of the Bill Champlin song, “Already Gone” from XXX). The lyrics are as optimistic and literate as you would expect from a Lamm co-penned composition. Keith Howland even gets in a tight, yet rocking guitar solo. The drums and percussion sound as contemporary and processed as anything on the radio today. This is not necessarily a good thing, still the song is exciting and hints of things to come.
In fact the band recently mentioned the next song should come out in about 30 days and was penned by trumpeter Lee Loughnane. Something’s coming, indeed!
