Steely Dan Sunday: “Peg [Live]” (1995)

*** STEELY DAN SUNDAY INDEX ***

Perhaps one of the two or three songs to make every Steely Dan set list since the guys started touring again in ’93, it’s no surprise that “Peg” makes its appearance on Alive in America. This version, taken from the ’94 tour, features Dennis Chambers’ fine reproduction of the original drum track of Rick Marotta and Georg Wadenius reinvention of the fabled guitar solo.

Wadenius wisely forgoes attempting to duplicate the original, and instead creates a part which easily could have been picked for the original version of the song. The sax section fills in the holes left by the absence of a clavinet and Becker’s rhythm guitar is prominently featured.

A rearranged version of “Peg”? Not a chance.
