Streams: Listen as Prince and 3rdEyeGirl cover “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam

Sporting a three-piece all-girl band, Prince recently asserted that he didn’t have time for collaborating with “old people.”

Apparently, however, that doesn’t apply to his cover choices.

Here’s Prince — who’ll be 55 this summer — performing a stripped-down, funked-up rendition of “Even Flow,” a No. 3 mainstream rock track from more than two decades back by Pearl Jam.

The song, we’re pretty sure, is about the same age as the kids in his backing group, 3rdEyeGirl.

The lineup features a smart guitarist in Donna Grantis, whose tangles with her boss on “Even Flow” add a new fizz to the proceedings. Close listeners will also hear a reference to “Rock Steady,” from Aretha Franklin’s appropriately titled 1971 album Young, Gifted and Black.

Prince and Co. are in the midst of a U.S. theater tour, from which this scalding new track emerged. Older fans (ahem!) will likely connect this current musical configuration with the nervy fusion of R&B and rock found on classic early-era Prince albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy.

“Even Flow,” composed by Stone Gossard and frontman Eddie Vedder, was originally featured on Pearl Jam’s 1991 studio effort Ten.

As for his fresh-faced new co-horts, Prince added: “I want to work with young people. I have my legacy. It’s time for their legacy.”
