One Track Mind: Prince, “Breakfast Can Wait” (2013)

by

After issuing the bluesy, rock-inspired “Screwdriver,” Prince is back with yet another leaked single — this one far more sensual, with a food-as-sex theme straight out of his carnal 1980s zenith. “Breakfast Can Wait” will give you a whole new concept of what constitutes the most important meal of the day.

Presented with minimal, slinky rhythm and this ruminative keyboard, Prince’s still-impossibly high vocal intertwines to produce a whispered blush-inducing entreaty to remain in bed. “Breakfast Can Wait” simply drips with flirty salaciousness.

This latest single is available on a new site that shares the name 3rdEyeGirl with a Twitter account that has been leaking Prince-related stuff for some time. Also for sale is “Screwdriver,” which appeared late last month. Price: Just 88 cents.

After a long period away, Prince become all but ubiquitous lately, as he prepares for a long-awaited new studio album. His most recent studio release goes all the way back to 2010.

More recently, though, he’s begun issuing single songs at a furious pace: First came one from 1982 and then two that are brand new have followed.
