‘Zero’ is another one of those ‘pure’ Matthew Shipp solo piano records where there’s nothing in between the depths of his soul and your ears.

”This Is Beautiful Because We Are Beautiful People’ is a set of performances that succeed because the Toxic musicians place all trust on instinct and the instincts of others.

Mat Walerian places much trust in his good instincts on ‘Jungle,’ even as he does show he knows much about the tenants music and even in the presence of more established masters.

As a vehicle for this promising woodwinds talent from Poland Mat Walerian, his encounter with Matthew Shipp on ‘Live at Okuden’ makes good on that promise.

Perhaps not quite as amazing as his fabled sides for Blue Note Records, but Bud Powell’s ‘Live At The Blue Note Café, Paris 1961’ is plenty good enough to make any jazzbo wish they’d have been there.

The first jazz record released by the just-beginning ESP-Disk record company, ‘Spiritual Unity’ quickly put this tiny label on the map, as well as thrust Ayler to the forefront of the free jazz movement when it was released more than a year later. Even then, this record was well ahead of the frontier of jazz and remains so today.
