‘KHMER Live in Bergen’ shows Nils Petter Molvær’s uniquely meticulous electronic instrumental music that finds beauty in the clash between calm and the calamitous can be faithfully executed outside of a studio.

Hearing bass legend Dave Holland playing loose and sometimes hard with other top line players in a democratic trio setting for ‘Another Land’ is just as good as you would think it would be. Maybe even a little bit better.

As we experience the hopeful signs of society coming out of a dark winter of plague, Chris Potter and his Circuits Trio are giving us music of rejuvenation with ‘Sunrise Reprise.’

We already knew that Chris Potter is good, but know we now know that he’s good even he has to do everything by himself.

Dinosaur’s ‘To the Earth’ creates a range of moods and themes, while also stepping back to past influences and forward into new territory.

Perhaps ‘Good Hope,’ the new collaboration from Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter, was meant to be. It sure sounds that way.

‘Circuits’ is another directional change for the supremely talented Chris Potter, but with the same high mark of accomplishment and ingenuity that’s found on nearly all of his recordings.

Avant-garde but never off putting, Anton Eger’s ‘Æ’ is a weird record, but weird in a great way.

Jeff Ballard moves further away from mainstream jazz, while keeping himself challenged on the drums.
