With all of the buzz surrounding Paul McCartney today, it seemed like an opportune time for a return to this radically remarkable track from Roger McGough and Mike McGear’s self-titled 1968 collaboration.
All educated Beatles fans — and that means you, of course — already know Mike is the brother of Paul McCartney. Not only did Paul produce “So Much In Love” (Parlophone Records), but a posse of other cool cats, such as Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Paul Samwell-Smith, Dave Mason, Graham Nash, Gary Leeds and Zoot Money donated their A-grade gifts to the cause.
Clad in a fine-fitting coat of phasing and distortion, the star-soaked song swishes around and around to a hypnotic temper. A heavy undercurrent sweeps through “So Much In Love,” while the taffy-stretching styled harmonies and insistent melody lines lend an additional trippy feel to the patchouli party.
Providing just the right balance of power and control, the tune, which was written by Roger McGough and Mike McGear, encompasses everything innovative and exciting regarding psychedelic music.

Now that’s a trip! Thanks for an interesting article about McGear. Roger McGough was a member of the Liverpool music/poetry group the Scaffold, as was Mike McCartney. That would certainly explain the surreal quality of the lyrics and music. Great stuff!
