It’s no accident that the Allman Brothers Band’ Warren Haynes plays a Gibson Les Paul, same as the late Duane Allman — who died in a October 1971 motorcycle accident just as the band went supernova behind At the Fillmore East.
“I would say he’s one of the people who inspired that decision,” Haynes tells Dunn Audio in this clip. “I always loved that sound, and he was someone who I really loved at an early age. The sound that he got on the Fillmore East record is still one of my favorite sounds.”
The late Allman was featured on the posthumously released 1972 double-album Eat a Peach, with Dickey Betts taking a more central role in the band thereafter. Betts, in turn, asked Haynes to join the reconstituted Allman Brothers in the late 1980s — just in time for the 1990 project Seven Turns
Haynes has been with the group ever since, even while he’s founded Gov’t Mule and toured with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead — including Phil Lesh and in the offshoot band the Dead. The guitarist says he’s continually impressed with what he’s picked up from Lesh and Co.
“I’ve been lucky to have been in a position to have played with those guys a lot through the years,” Haynes says. “It’s a cool learning process — and inspiring. I love the fact that they are always looking to push the boundaries and explore new ground, even if it’s within the framework of their traditional catalog.”
Gov’t Mule has a new double album called Shout! set to drop on September 24, 2013 on Blue Note Records. The second disc features a number of huge guest stars, including My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Dr. John, Glenn Hughes, Dave Matthews and Steve Winwood, among others. Haynes is also touring with the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration.
