You’re far more likely to hear him play the B-side’s proto-metal triumph “Beck’s Bolero,” yet Jeff Beck can’t quite shake his jokey 1967 solo-debut single “Hi Ho Silver Lining” — if only because it’s become a soccer anthem.
Beck didn’t just add guitar, he also sang on the Mickie Most-selected “Hi Ho” — which he says has charted three different times. These days, however, Beck says the track just doesn’t fit with the rest of what would become one of rock music’s most intriguing catalogs.
“It’s a great song,” Beck says in this video, “I just hated singing it. It’s just a bit embarrassing, when you’re trying to play your moody guitar. Mickie told, he said: ‘You’ll be hearing this for a long time.’ We did it as a joke, I think it was for the Prince’s Trust, and it really got the crowd going. But I’m never going to sing it again.”
Beck also memorably performed it during the 1983 ARMS Charity Concert for MS, which included a star-packed jam session with Steve Winwood, Simon Phillips and others. More recently, it was part of Beck’s shared bill with Eric Clapton in 2009-10.
“Beck’s Bolero” was later included on Beck’s 1968 solo debut, though “Hi Ho Silver Lining” didn’t make the final cut on Truth.
