‘There wouldn’t be enough dressing rooms’: David Coverdale on the difficulties of a full-scale Whitesnake reunion

For a band that has been through a revolving set of members at every position save for frontman David Coverdale’s, Tommy Aldridge’s comeback with Whitesnake is that rarest of things: A happy reunion.

In fact, the drummer is the only former member to have made a return stint in the band over its 35 years. (That’s not counting one-off appearances like original guitarist Bernie Marsden’s back in May.) Aldridge is, in fact, participating in his third go round, having been a member during Whitesnake’s MTV hey day from 1987-1991, then again from 2002-07.

“He’s driving the band astonishingly,” Coverdale says in this video talk. “He’s a great and well-loved drummer. We’re thrilled to have him back.”

Over the years, Whitesnake has also featured Vivian Campbell, Ian Paice and Jon Lord (who, like Coverdale, have connections back to Deep Purple), Steve Vai, Tony Franklin, Rudy Sarzo, Cozy Powell, Denny Carmassi and Brian Tichy, among others.

As for why they departed, Coverdale says: “People have different focuses. For instance, the previous drummer (Tichy, who left for Something Unto Nothing) was amazing, and had all of the ammunition we needed. But his aspiration, his dream, was to be a silly guitarist. As somebody who lives his dream every day, and encourages others to do the same, I let him go with love and best wishes.”

Current guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach have been with Whitesnake since 2002. Bassist Michael Devin joined in 2010, with singer Brian Ruedy coming on board a year later. As for the rest, Coverdale, in fact, says he’s not sure how many people have passed through the Whitesnake ranks, making any kind of large scale recombining of former members all but impossible.

“There wouldn’t be enough dressing rooms, I don’t think,” Coverdale quips.

there was Neil Murray as well who came back to Whitesnake and being replaced by Colin Hodgkinson and then replacing him. Could also say Micky Moody as well as he left but came back but without being replaced
