‘It makes you want to be great’: Brad Wilk enthuses about Black Sabbath’s loose, fun reunion

Brad Wilk, who was plucked out of Rage Against the Machine by producer Rick Rubin, has come to think of his time playing drums on the forthcoming Black Sabbath reunion project in almost mythical terms.

“All three of the guys are the best at what they do,” Wilk says, in the attached video. “It’s just inspiring to walk into a room, and to be a part of that. It makes you want to be great.”

Wilk is playing on 13, the first Sabbath record to feature Ozzy Osbourne since 1978, in place of Bill Ward. Rubin suggested the switch after Tony Iommi and Co. couldn’t come to contract terms with the group’s founding drummer.

After an initial acclimation period, it’s clear that all sides began to click. A easy sense of improvisational looseness followed.

At one point, as Wilk discusses one of Black Sabbath’s older recordings, bassist Geezer Butler cheekily admits: “We spent more on the cocaine than we did at the studio.” At another, Ozzy enthuses about “a perfect mistake I made there.”

All of that combined, Wilk adds, to make 13 a better album. “I actually love their sense of humor,” Wilk says. “It really is helpful that none of them seem to take themselves too seriously.”
