Original Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks have set a second date in what is becoming a tandem series of appearances opposite the band they helped establish more than five decades ago. The trio will perform this fall at the Greek Theatre in LA.
Wilson, Jardine and Marks have already set a previous performance date of July 25, 2013 in Kettering, Ohio, even as Mike Love — who became the administrator of the Beach Boys brand while Wilson battled personal issues years ago — continues playing smaller venues with only second-generation member Bruce Johnston in tow. The Greek Theatre date for Wilson and Co. is October 20, 2013.
[SOMETHING ELSE! REWIND: After this latest split, fans of the Beach Boys feel-good comeback offering ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio’ are never going to be able to listen to “Isn’t It Time” the same way again.]
This latest schism between the ever-battling Beach Boys camps couldn’t have come at a more shocking moment, just as the briefly reunited band was riding a crest of good will surrounding its 2012 release That’s Why God Made the Radio and a celebrated 50th anniversary tour.
When the originally scheduled dates ended, however, Love chose to go on without Wilson, Jardine and Marks — effectively breaking up the group all over again, over Wilson’s very public pleas to continue. Jardine has gone on record as saying he can’t understand how it came to this, either.
Instead, the ousted trio began building toward what looks to be a separate — and some would say, considering the fact that it includes the Beach Boys creative heart and soul in Brian Wilson, the more legitimate — edition of the group. Wilson and Jardine were part of the KLOS Christmas on December 13, 2012, and Jardine appeared on Marks’ new solo album The Circle Continues, along with Stephen Kalinich, a Beach Boys lyricist.
Wilson has since closed the door on the idea of another reunion with Love and Co.
