*** STEELY DAN SUNDAY INDEX ***
There are some things I don’t like about “Girlfriend” and other things I just love.
First the bad and ugly. As with “Lucky Henry,” Becker pastes together disparate ideas in a haphazard way. The transition from verse to chorus is abrupt and it’s as if someone hit the random skip button on the iPod in the middle of the song. The bridge meanders badly. And those drums…those goddamned fake drums. Why o why couldn’t he had called in Pretty Purdie instead?
And then there is the good. It does groove, especially the chorus, which is actually rather catchy. There are quotable lines galore in this song (“Stranded between the Green Acres of my good intentions and the Twilight Zone of zero self-control”). And where else and with who else in all of rock would you find a whack jazz bass clarinet solo?
Dammit, Walter, you had to reference Eric Dolphy, didn’t you? I guess that means I have to overlook those shortcomings and just embrace this schizoid song.
