Geezer Butler is on a roll: Even while writing the bulk of the lyrics for a long-awaited reunion with original lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath’s founding bassist has composed enough songs for a solo album, too.
“When I finish this cycle for Sabbath, touring and the album and everything else, I’ll start work on the next GZR album,” Butler tells That Metal Show’s Eddie Trunk, in the attached video. “There’s a lot of material written, it’s just getting the time to record it. It will probably be sometime next year.”
Between then and now will be the release this summer of 13, which brings Butler and founding guitarist Tony Iommi together with Osbourne for the first time since they concluded a string of eight Black Sabbath studio albums with 1978’s Never Say Die. They’ll mount a tour that will bring the group to the states later in 2013.
Butler has had a major role, as per usual on the classic Sabbath recordings, in shaping the song narratives for 13.
“I’ve written most of the lyrics,” Butler adds. “Ozzy comes up with the titles, and gives me the inspiration to write the lyrics. So, I think we have 16 songs, and I’ve written 14 sets of lyrics.”
GZR has released five projects since its founding in 1995, with the most recent being 2005’s Ohmwork. The lineup includes guitarist Pedro Howse, who is Butler’s nephew.

oh man, they couldn’t have played just a _second_ of something new? dammit.
still, pretty excited for this.
That hacked me off, too. I watched the video, hoping that every time they cut to a shot of them in the studio that we’d get just a little taste of something. I’m cautiously hopeful.
