Toto, “Caught In the Balance” from ‘Mindfields’ (1999): Toto Tuesdays

Mindfields as an album is an eclectic and sometimes self-indulgent offering from Toto. Given the return of Bobby Kimball, there was a heightened sense of anticipation for the classic Toto sound and the band explored a variety of genres, in an effort to recapture that original magic.

“Caught In the Balance” is a true band composition from writers Steve Lukather, David Paich, Simon Phillips, Mike Porcaro and Bobby Kimball, along with and regular contributor Stan Lynch. Many classic Toto hallmarks are on display, while it also brings fresh elements to the Toto sound.

Opening with a light reggae pulse, the intro is sparse with détaché strings and tasty guitar licks, before Toto kicks into gear with a straight-forward rock beat accompanied by a sheen of synth tones and crunchy guitar chords.

Kimball’s lead vocals on “Caught In the Balance” remind you that when he’s on, he is on: This is a powerful and controlled performance, bringing back memories of “Girl Goodbye,” which is a treat for longtime fans. In the chorus, there are strong vocal harmonies from Kimball and David Paich, assisted by Mr. Mister alum Richard Page. The turnaround into the chorus, by the way, is a glorious rock hook by Steve Lukather on guitar and Simon Phillips on drums – a precise combination that really punctuates the mix and lifts the energy. Take a listen around 3:04.

After the chorus, there is an awesome instrumental interlude with pulsing synth tones and dynamic drum fills which echoes the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” I often wonder if this was Simon’s influence – having been the drummer with the Who on their 1989 reunion tour – that brought this element to the song. Regardless, “Caught In the Balance” is a powerful and energetic track and, fittingly, was a concert staple when Kimball was still touring with Toto.

A blistering solo by Steve Lukather follows on the studio version, and more dynamic and soaring vocals from Kimball, who is nailing it. That glorious guitar/drum turnaround (check it at 4:48) takes us back to a double chorus and then out. Note, the reappearance of the intro strings, but this time over a more forceful backing from the drums in the style of the instrumental interlude.

These smart arrangements and deft blending of genres are the hallmarks of classic Toto. With a superb vocal performance from Bobby Kimball and exquisite musicianship from all onboard, “Caught In the Balance” is the standout track that most strongly recaptures the magic from their formative years.

Toto Tuesdays is a song-by-song feature that explores the band’s rich musical history. They returned with three new songs on 2018’s ’40 Trips Around the Sun.’
