Considering the Doughboys are so heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones, it makes perfect sense they would eventually get around to rendering something from the legendary British band’s catalog.
And so, here on the Plainfield, New Jersey group’s latest single we’re gifted with a reprise of “Play With Fire” (RAM Records). But rather than sticking to the original arrangement of the 1965 classic, the Doughboys turn the haunting baroque styled sentiment into a garage-punk pounder.

From lead singer Myke Scavone’s gutsy vocals to drummer Richie Heyman’s volcanic tub-thumping beats to Gar Francis and Mike Caruso’s wicked and scorching riffing, “Play With Fire” rocks to the max with emotional thrills. As an added accessory, Myke blows a howling harp towards the end of the session, providing the track with a bluesy Yardbirds inspired rave-up.
Look for “Play With Fire” to be included on the band’s forthcoming album Running For Covers, which duly promises more dynamic delights. The epitome of rock and roll cool – that’s the Doughboys!
