Terry Kath’s “Your Love’s An Attitude” is the second bonus track found on the 2003 Rhino remaster of Chicago X. (The first, a rehearsal version of Robert Lamm’s “I’d Rather Be Rich,” which will be discussed later along with its final version on Chicago XIV). Terry’s song finds him celebrating the all-too-brief domestic bliss he found with second wife Camelia and their infant daughter, Michelle. Michelle would go on to create the excellent documentary film about her father, The Terry Kath Experience.
Fans of the original band will no doubt notice that the musicians on this recording could be none other than Chicago members Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera (bass) and Danny Seraphine (drums). As usual, they provide just the right accompaniment for Terry Kath’s composition.
“Your Love’s an Attitude” is, like many latter-day Kath-era pieces, hornless. In the aforementioned documentary, it’s clear Kath was going to leave Chicago and start his own trio, Cook County. That would have really been something amazing, in my opinion, if “Takin’ It on Uptown” from Chicago XI is a taste of what might have been. Tragically, Cook County was never to be.
The composition at hand finds Terry singing into a tenor range in Spanish toward the end, even going into a little scat vocal at times. Scat singing was a natural for Kath, as he was a huge jazz fan. It’s a shame this wonderful, mostly acoustic jazzy tune didn’t find itself on Chicago X, as it could have replaced any of the weaker tracks.
