This coming Friday (January 27, 2017) marks the last release coming from Matthew Shipp on the storied Thirsty Ear label. As previously noted in a full assessment of the upcoming album, Shipp invests in Piano Song “with the same vigor and commitment as a first audition, but with the collected confidence of an established vet.”
To whet your appetite until the record goes on sale, above is an advance stream of the track “Flying Carpet.”
Drummer Newman Taylor-Baker shows his well-honed skills as both a pocket-creating timekeeper and a shrewd texturalist. Michael Bisio on bass fills out a harmony so completely with no wasted notes, because he’s always keenly aware of what’s going on around him. And Shipp? He has a singular ability to tantalize with well-placed chords — and only chords — the entire track.
In short, “Flying Carpet” shows how Matthew Shipp and his trio gets that jazz feel while dispensing with conventional jazz methods.
