Joe Bonamassa, “Christmas Boogie” (2015): One Track Mind

Got the Christmas blues, or just want some blues for Christmas? Either way, Joe’s got ya’ covered…

“Christmas Boogie” is a brand new yuletide ditty that blues-rock guitar VIP Joe Bonamassa has slapped together just in time for the most wonderful time of the year. As the title advertises it’s a toe-tappin’ blues boogie, with a soulful vocal from Joe B. and a little bit of his succulent slide work.

While Bonamassa usually draws inspiration from British blues guitar god like Clapton and Page, this rockin’, rollicking number is more in the spirit of American blues icons like Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the most recognizable blues boogie song of all, ZZ Top’s “La Grange.” Going by the video above, Bonamassa wrote the tune on the fly after a little prodding by producer Kevin Shirley. When he’s ready to put it on tape, the backing band gives it the driving rhythm that the song calls for.

OK, so maybe this is becoming an annual ritual for Joe Bonamassa, but some fresh new Christmas blues cheer in your stocking every year ain’t such a bad tradition.
