Have you waiting for a band that blissfully combines the jazzy intellect of Steely Dan, the sharp wit of 10cc and the irresistible power pop of Squeeze to come along? I know I have, and that wait is over.
Coming out of Essex in England, The 1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco makes pop music for grown ups, Ben Folds Five fans and children of the seventies and eighties (maybe they’re all the same thing?). Catchy, radio length tunes fill up their 2014 debut record Private Jet Flashback, and they even made a couple of eye-catching videos of cuts from that album.
One is “Clean Break,” a lost track from Pretzel Logic but with a slightly harder rockin’ groove (another cut ” Love The Smell Of Bacon In The Morning” is almost like “My Old School” without a horn chart). Clean production and the apparent absence of all the trendy studio tricks give the song a timeless feel. And lyrics you can actually make out. It’s good to know there are some newer acts that make music the older way.
