Matthew Shipp on David S. Ware, unusual collaborations + the Miles Davis Paradigm

If you’re into checking out the informal, unfiltered thoughts of some of the movers, shakers and shapers in the fields of the Arts and Humanities, you need to check out Dialogue Talk. On this site, you are presented with both the audio and the text from recorded interviews, each one nicely divvied up into bite-sized thoughts and topics with the unedited text accompanying the link to the stream.

Just among musicians previously covered on this space, Dialogue Talk had recorded the verbal musings of Ahmad Jamal, Arto Lindsay and Rhys Chatham. Composers, poets, philosophers, photographers and scientists have also had their brains picked apart for their unique insights. DT calls this living library of the fine arts a “digital encyclopedia and archive of the thoughts, ideas, and perspectives of extraordinary global figures from across the arts and humanities.”

One of the newest addition to this encyclopedia is, quite appropriately, outward-thinking pianist Matthew Shipp. Shipp, as his fans already know well, carries over his flair for original thoughtful expression on piano into the arena of discourse on topics that matter to him. Getting this portal inside the mind of Matthew Shipp may or may not increase your appreciation of his music but it’s bound to deepen your understanding of it, which in itself makes these quick series of observations and recollections a worthwhile listen.
