The Allman Brothers Band will soon pull into the station for good, but Gregg Allman shows via a forthcoming concert film that he’s not finished playing the role of Midnight Rider. That iconic track, originally found on the Allman Brothers Band’s 1970 album Idlewild South, is given a gutsy new reading from Allman as part of an all-star concert held last January in Atlanta.
The version of “Midnight Rider” on All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman ends up as a showcase not just for Allman, however, but also for Zac Brown, Vince Gill, Chuck Leavell and Kenny Aronoff. Brown handles the second verse, before Leavell — a long-time Allman Brothers collaborator — takes a lengthy excursion on the keyboard. Gill then offers a scorching solo before Allman returns to bring the song to its emotional close.
Allman was joined elsewhere in the evening by the Warren Haynes, Jaimoe, Derek Trucks and the rest of the Allman Brothers Band; the bill that also included Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Dr. John, John Haitt, Jackson Browne, Widespread Panic and Sam Moore, among many others. Up next for the Allman Brothers Band, in the midst of a final tour, is an appearance at the Wanee Music Festival.
All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman, due on May 8, 2014, is presented in a 2CD/DVD package. The bonus material is highlighted by a series of interviews, as well as footage from behind the scenes.
