Sammy Hagar has fronted some of the biggest, and some of the loudest, bands around — from Montrose and HSAS to Van Halen and Chickenfoot. Up next? He’s thinking about unplugging. Hagar, who just released an all-star recording called Sammy Hagar and Friends featuring bandmates from all three outfits, says he’s been locked away in his studio trying to reimagine his best known songs in this new format.
“I’m determined to be able to play a whole hour to an hour and a half show by myself with an acoustic guitar,” Hagar tells the Phoenix Times. “I’m working on it really hard, and it calls for a lot of old songs having to be restructured. You can’t sing a heavy rock tune with an acoustic guitar the same way you would do it with a band. So, I’m taking the songs that lend themselves to that, and I’m changing keys and tempos and stuff. I’m working really hard on it, because I really want it to be great.”
Chickenfoot has been on an extended hiatus, while drummer Chad Smith tours with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That’s given Hagar plenty of time to consider side projects. As of yet, the proposed acoustic show is so early in the planning stages that he doesn’t even have a proposed venue yet.
“I don’t know where I’m going to do it,” Hagar adds, laughing. “I don’t even have a plan — I just decided in my head that something I want to do is go out and play a real intimate show somewhere. I don’t think I’d go on tour, and I don’t think I would do it in Cabo Wabo either, because Cabo Wabo is such a party place. I’m telling you, this is the freshest information I have. I don’t know where I want to do it, but I want to find a nice theater somewhere and I want to go there and I want to do this, and have a few people accompany me. So, this is what I’ve been doing — it’s my newest project, musically.”
