By all rights, this should not be my kind of thing. A synth-pop band fronted by a singer who’s bubbling over with earnestness? Sometimes, the “rules” just do not apply.
I’d actually never heard of Future Islands until seeing a mention of how they’d gone viral via an appearance on Letterman. More accurately, what went viral was a GIF file of singer Samuel Herring doing a move that maybe should be seen instead of described.
They played “Seasons (Waiting On You)” and I was just mesmerized. Herr, who reminds the ear of the Fine Young Cannibals’ Roland Gift, is either a great onstage actor or has cornered the market on sincerity. Either way, with that level of intensity, he just owned that song.
