The Zakary Thaks released several stupedenous singles between the years 1966 and 1969 that not only rule righteously as some of the greatest songs of the era, but any decade.
Had the band, born and bred in Corpus Christi, Texas, been affiliated with a major label and had the means to tour extensively, they would have surely been a constant fixture on radio stations throughout the whole world. But thanks to hardcore vinyl fiends and those with a nose for the fringe, the Zakary Thaks is probably even more popular now than they were back then.
Although a few compilations have been made available, complete with previously unissued material, the songs paired on this single, “She’s Got You”/”Jax Beer Commercial” (Big Beat Records) have not appeared anywhere until now. Navigated by a pounding groove, boosted by a hungry and menacing snarl, “She’s Got You” keys in as a platinum-plus garage rock classic. The energy is high and intense, the guitars clatter with edginess, the drums thump with power, and even a mini-rave up is squeezed into the picture. Tough and tight, “She’s Got You” may reference the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds, but the Zakary Thaks successfully flash their own cool personality across the screen.
The flipside of the disc, “Jax Beer Commercial” is indeed a plug for the foamy stuff, and snatches bits and pieces from the band’s killer diller “Face To Face,” a fiery Kinks styled raver that all garage rock aficonaidos are no doubt hip to. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — the Zakary Thaks are amazing, and “She’s Got You” is yet another testimony to the band’s talent and insight, as well as their commitment to true blue rock ‘n’ roll.
