The announcement that another Queen album featuring additional unheard items from Freddie Mercury, including sessions with Michael Jackson, could in the works was met with dizzying excitement. Not so fast, Brian May says.
The band, which now includes May and Roger Taylor after the unexpected retirement of John Deacon and the passing of Freddie Mercury, hopes to include some new material, as well. Then, there is the matter of sorting through what remains from Mercury’s legendary tenure.
“These things go at their own pace,” May tells AOR Magazine. “I don’t know how much we’ll get done. We may end up with an album which is partly retrospective, and partly new stuff.”
Fans rallied around the most recent Queen album to include Mercury leftovers, 1995’s Made in Heaven — which went four-times platinum in the UK, and gold in the states. Since, the band’s lone new studio release has been 2008’s Paul Rodgers collaboration The Cosmos Rocks.
“We’ll just have to see how it goes, because you can’t really rush this stuff,” May adds. “You have to find your way. You can’t just stick things on a couple of vocal tracks. You have to really feel your way. It’s the same as always: If you are making a Queen album, it can’t be rushed.”
