Fleetwood Mac is known as much for their breakups, and their long periods off the road, as they are for megahit albums like 1977’s Rumours. Band co-founder Mike Fleetwood says that’s the key to their longevity.
“We haven’t exactly overstayed our welcome,” Fleetwood says in the RCN clip below. “We pull away, and then come back. Fortunately, we have incredibly loyal people in our audience — which we should really be grateful for.”
Fleetwood Mac — which today features Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and John McVie — didn’t tour for five years in the 1980s, and also laid off between 1997-2003. They only toured once between 2004 and their on-going world tour, as well.
There’s a method to that madness, beyond keeping things fresh for themselves and for fans. Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967, and first toured — behind the Kiln House album — all the way back in 1970.
None of them could be confused with spring chickens.
“We’re no longer 18 years old,” Fleetwood confirms, “and I think one of the things on this tour that we’ve realized is that we’re doing hugely well. And we’re really, really grateful that we’re still doing something that we love to do, and people are still enjoying it. As a band we should be, and we really, are very grateful.”
