Subversive jazz-adjacent saxophonist Skerik continues his going-against-the-grain ways: he’s about to issue an album full of ambient music. You read this right. SKERIK 0610725 (Loosegroove Records) is a full-on commitment to spacey atmospherics, not grooves.
Ambient music might seems like a left turn for a guy long know for his funk-rock-jazz-dub experimentations in ensembes like Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs, Critters Buggin and the like. A deeper dive into Skerik’s career reveals this has long been part of his musical DNA. After slowing warming up to his mom’s Music for Airports Brian Eno album, the younger Skerik later became an ECM Records fan, particularly the soothing, spotless recordings of such classic stalwarts like Eberhard Weber. Eventually, this style was present in Skerik records like Ameoba (Critters Buggin) and Psychochromatic is essentially looped saxes but it’s more experimental than ambient. Still, the idea was lurking in the background.
It’s now in the foreground. The advance single “Air Garden” (video above) shows how Skerik uses his old saxophonics techniques to create this ambience. You might hear the puffing but little else about this sonic stew sounds much like saxophones. A single, low note sets the key, a faint higher sonority adds harmonizing tones to this minimalist piece.
SKERIK 0610725 is poised for release on April 24. Pre-order/order it from Bandcamp.
