Camila Nebbia is quickly becoming a new, global saxophone sensation but she’s also the latest in a line of dynamic free jazz blowers from Argentina that traces back to Gato Barbieri’s time with Don Cherry in the mid 60’s. In a nod to that lineage, Nebbia’s newest release Noche y Niebla (March 6 2026, ears&eyes Records) presents Nebbia sharing the front of a quartet with the multi-talented Luis Nacht, who took up sax after mastering guitar, flute and vocals. Nacht has been recording records under his own name since the late 90s.
Noche y Niebla isn’t some uncontrolled, rip-roaring saxophone collision. Far from it, the two reedists innately find ways to blend together to double the sax pleasure. The melodies aren’t noise, they’re very much part of the process and go to places not so much planned but anticipated. Jerónimo Carmona (double bass) and Fermín Merlo (drums) aren’t a rhythm section just along for the ride, they actively shape the music.
All of those tendencies are on display in the video premiering above, for the track titled “Me condiciona el nombre.” You witness two reed maestros very much tuned into each other, following each other around, finishing each other’s figures. Carmona is the guy keeping time until the tautness reaches a breaking point and Merlo emphatically takes over. Nacht lets loose wails of passion as Nebbia squawks a complementing flurry of notes.
This “Me condiciona el nombre” video is the handing off of the baton from one generation of Argentinian free jazz to another, visualized. Though, Luis Nacht doesn’t appear to be anywhere near done, and Camila Nebbia is just getting started.
