Mamas Gun + Brian Jackson “DIG!” from ‘DIG!’ (2026): Something Else! sneak peek

The satisfyin’ soul-pop group from the UK Mamas Gun are poised to follow up Cure The Jones with another collection that recalls what was great about American R&B in 60s and 70s. DIG! is their sixth studio long-player, featuring more of songs that take you back to the Motown, Philly Sound and Hi-Hat Memphis soul of the Impressions, Marvin Gaye, Spinners and Al Green, but with a contemporary vibrancy. It’s led by a gifted singer-songwriter and instrumentalist in Andy Platts (Young Gun Silver Fox) who has a limitless knack for hooks and blending vintage styles into a familiar but fresh approach.

Andy Platts’ got a gift for songcraft but even he get writer’s block sometimes. When he had the concept for a song mostly done but couldn’t get it across the finish line, he called on old friend Brian Jackson to finish it. The song, “DIG!”, ended up being the lead-off and titular song for this new album, and the second advance single releasing on February 4, 2026. And Jackson ended up being a prominent participant on the recording of that song.

Yes, that Brian Jackson of Gil Scott-Heron, Stevie Wonder and Will Downing fame. His bonafides as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer were established long ago, even when Platts first encountered him more than twenty ago at the start of his own career. Mamas Gun are purveyors of neo-soul…well Brian Jackson practically invented the genre almost forty-five years ago when he composed and recorded “I Think I’ll Call It Morning” with Scott-Heron for the latter’s groundbreaking record Pieces Of A Man.

The soul icon contributed keyboards and flute to the title track. Jackson also takes a co-lead vocal role, singing the second set of verses and layering in his vocals with Platts during the chorus. Both him and Platts sing of seeking truth, to “scratch beneath the surface, of what you think you know,” lyrics that invoke and inspire.

The rest of DIG! continues on the same mission with the band’s typical aplomb. Chris Boot (drums), Cameron Dawson (bass), Terry Lewis (guitar) and Dave Oliver (keyboards) round out the group.
