Montréal-based pianist and composer Kate Wyatt caused some ripples with her 2022 debut album Artifact and she’s poised to make bigger waves with her trio-based followup Murmurations. It’s a group of consistently superb tracks by a traditional piano jazz trio that takes a very modern and imaginative approach to the tried-and-true format.
Providing an accurate taste of what’s to come with Murmurations, the video of the album’s concluding track “Music Is Beautiful” is premiering above. Although Wyatt has shown on her upcoming release that she’s a very capable composer with nuance and soul, “Music is Beautiful” was penned by Adrian Vedady, the bassist.
Graceful with sophisticated voicings, Wyatt can tease out chord progressions that don’t follow down the beaten path, finding melodicism from the chords not often chosen. That formula extends all the way to this album’s final track. The esoteric melody of “Music Is Beautiful” is caressed by Wyatt with refined assistance from the Vedady/Louis-Vincent Hamel (drums) rhythm section. It’s capped off by a comely bass feature by Vedady himself.
Murmurations is set to drop on October 10, 2025. Pre-order/order this album on Bandcamp.
