Recording sessions of unpremeditated music are cool. Unpremeditated music where the sessions themselves are unpremeditated are cooler still.
That’s kind of what happened when Argentinian saxophonist Matias Formica invited pianist Rocío Giménez López and bassist/percussionist Matthew Golombisky to participate in a project of his where he made an album consisting of different trios led by Formica contributing two improvised tracks a piece. But something apparently clicked with this lineup because when it was all said and done, Formica, Giménez López and Golombisky ended up with a whole album’s worth of releasable material on their own.
Golombisky, who heads up eyes&ears Records, is doing just that, releasing those sessions. 4.9 (out September 9, 2022) is forty-eight minutes of the three having a series of short, concise musical conversations, showing remarkable symbiosis especially considering that Giménez López and Golombisky hadn’t even previously met.
In the video premiering above, we get to witness this coaction as it was happening. During “wha tekau ma iwa,” Giménez López and Formica play as if there are deep inside each other’s minds. Golombisky is very resourceful in reacting to the two, using both acoustic and – very subtly – electronic percussion effects, in particular the Tibetan singing bowl pairing up perfectly with the middle and upper reaches of Formica’s alto saxophone.
Pre-order/order 4.9 by Giménez López, Golombisky and Formica from Bandcamp.
