Lindsey Webster with Brian Culbertson, “I Didn’t Mean It” (2022): One Track Mind

Jazz-pop vocal sensation Lindsey Webster is set to drop her follow-up to A Woman Like Me a little later in 2022. In the meantime, here’s an advance single “I Didn’t Mean It” that absolutely will whet the appetite for her third album since her 2016 breakthrough long-player Back To Your Heart.

“I Didn’t Mean It” is a strong indication that any pandemic-induced setbacks have not broken her creative stride. Topics of love and relationships come naturally for the recently (but amicably) divorced Webster, who recently jumped back into the dating game and faced the challenges that came with it.

Only for Webster, she’s able to channel those frustrations into song, and “I Didn’t Mean It” is a good one. It starts with a tight, mid-tempo groove and Webster’s trademark catchy chord pattern. And despite all the contemporary touches carried out by smart production and ace musicians, Webster sings it with the verve and sense of swing of a seasoned big band vocalist.

Brian Culbertson’s guest turn is memorable, too. He picked up the trombone instead of trumpet for the occasion, and that was the right call. He subtly interlaces that brass right behind Webster’s vocals, matching her sultriness like only this slide instrument can, then briefly steps out front for a funky aside.

“I Didn’t Mean It” comes to us from Shanachie Entertainment, as will that upcoming Lindsey Webster album.
