Thrift Store Halo created quite a buzz when their debut album World Gone Mad was issued in 1998. But the stars were just not properly aligned at the time. Band members were too busy with their personal lives to continue on and agreed to call it a day.
Nearly 20 years later, Thrift Store Halo surfaced with the six-track EP Pop-Rocket (Hi-Beam Records), which was greeted with ecstatic reviews. Not only had the Chicago-based band retained their spark, but were so stoked by such positive receptions that they kept right on going.
A fine comeback indeed, Thrift Store Halo’s Pop-Rocket takes listeners on an energetic expedition of modern guitar rock.
Blazing full steam ahead with gritty vocals tempered by melody, riffs that alternately ring and roar, and rough and tough drumming, “I’m Not Through,” “Get Over You” and “Stay Away” pin the passionate angst of vintage Graham Parker to a wall of hard-fisted power-pop arrangements.
Carved of a bracing chorus and keen hooks and breaks, “Save Me From Myself” signs on as an additional showstopper, as well as the absolutely irresistible “Let’s Not Wait,” which jangles with jaunty rhythms and catchy harmonies.
Thrift Store Halo proceeded to release two more efforts – a single (“Every Time With You/Concrete Sky”) and another (Consolation Prize Fighter), and both were likewise highly praised. A new album is now slated to arrive in early 2022, so stay tuned for further rocking revelations from this great band.
