Chicago, “Here Is Where We Begin” (1984): Saturdays in the Park

Upon first listen, it’s evident why Chicago’s “Here Is Where We Begin” didn’t originally make the cut on Chicago 17: There’s the old adage that the bridesmaid should never be prettier than the bride.

A guest vocalist is there to help elevate songs for the musician or group he is guesting with, not soar above — especially not when those vocals are being shared by one of the band’s mainstays.

“Here Is Where We Begin” is not and was not one of Robert Lamm’s better vocal performances. His singing is cringe-inducingly sad, especially given how strong his vocals were in the ’70s. Lamm sounds like he’s struggling for notes that he once hit with ease, and his performance sounds slightly flat as a result.

Just when one might hit skip or stop, David Pack comes in and rescues “Here Is Where We Begin.” The former Ambrosia frontman’s vocal makes this song not just listenable but enjoyable, leaving the listener wanting to hear more. Unfortunately for Chicago, Pack might also compel the listener to take a deeper dive into Ambrosia’s catalog — not Chicago’s.

The melody, the beat, and Lamm’s less-than-enjoyable singing just kind of limp along, until Pack arrives and, by force of will, saves “Here Is Where We Begin” from its own initial dour mediocrity. Call it a vocal “fireman’s carry.”

In short, this is an exceptional song in spite of Chicago, not because of them. “Here Is Where We Begin” is worth listening to for David Pack, and for David Pack alone. He saved Chicago from themselves.
