When he is not busy interviewing rock stars or writing books about his favorite artists, Ken Sharp creates his own groovy music. The well-known journalist’s latest endeavor is the single “Girl / Forget That Girl,” a tribute to Monkees star Davy Jones, who sadly left us in February 2012.
“Girl” was originally cut in 1971 and performed by Jones on an episode of The Brady Bunch. Recapturing the polish and shine of the initial recording, Sharp delivers an excellent rendition of “Girl” at every angle. His beaming vocals are a dead ringer for Davy, while twinkling piano figures, chiming tambourines and big-band styled horn arrangements reinforce the positive energy flooding the song.
The B-side of “Girl” is “Forget That Girl,” which appeared on the Monkees’ classic 1967 Headquarters album. A loyal treatment is again at hand, with “Forget That Girl” humming to an infectious tone of strummy chords, a punchy backbeat, cool keyboard trills and a spot of falsetto and dinging cowbell.
There is no better musician than Ken Sharp to give thanks to Davy Jones, and this single smacks of such love and appreciation.
“Girl / Forget That Girl” is available as a download through Bandcamp. Limited vinyl copies of the single can also be purchased by contacting Ken at [email protected]. Not only is “Girl / Forget That Girl” a pop-tastic piece of music, but it was recorded for a good cause, as proceeds go to the Davy Jones Equine Memorial Foundation.
