After a 13-year hiatus from recording, Lolas have returned with A Dozen or Seven Tapestries that not only indicates they haven’t lost a pint of passion since they last entered the studio, but seals their legacy as Birmingham, Alabama’s greatest band.
Featuring lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Tim Boykin, drummer Shea Rives and bassist Jeff Waites, the trio has never pretended to be anything other than a pure-grade power-pop band. You know just what you’re getting when you slip a Lolas disc into the player, and A Dozen or Seven Tapestries (Kool Kat Musik) is no exception.
Rocking intently to the beat of racing Johnny Ramone-styled guitars, buzzing with nagging hooks, pumping percussion and harmonic heft, numbers such as “Indigo,” the title track of the album, “Bon Voyage” and “DJ Girl” deftly define how amazingly tight and energetic Lolas are.
Excitable vocals, tinted with a joyous Archies-scented bubblegummy bent add a touch of vulnerable charm to the band’s formula. Here’s a batch of songs certain to make you bob your head and clap your hands while grinning with delight.
Fueled by Boykin’s tuneful songcraft and Lolas’ sharp and synchronized instrumentation, A Dozen or Seven Tapestries is the benchmark which all power-pop albums should be measured by.
