Jazz Bassist Petros Klampanis Begins Kickstarter Campaign for ‘Irrationalities’

Talented bassist, composer and bandleader Petros Klampanis is set to put out Irrationalities — his fourth album as a leader — but after a couple of larger ensemble albums, Klampanis is now exploring the trio format. The Petros Klampanis Trio (aka “PKtrio”) will infuse the Greek jazz bassist’s vast knowledge of classical and world music forms into a small combo just as he’s successfully done with larger formats.

A few years ago we illustrated in this space what he could do with a strings+quartet with the song ‘Luiza’ from 2015’s Minor Dispute. Now he’s enlisted only two musicians to help him carry out this sort of vision but he picked his guys shrewdly: Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu is an ECM Records recording artist while the German-Polish drummer Bodek Janke has played with Dave Liebman, Billy Harper, Samir Chatterjee, Ben Monder and Dave Binney.

From the snippets provided in these videos, it’s already clear that this trio matches the crispness, energy and wonderful complexity of the Corea/Haynes/Mitous outfit of yore. But it’s safe to assume that an artist of Klampanis’ ambition has way more tricks up his sleeve than just copying Corea.

The plan is for Irrationalities to release in October 2019, but it’s going to need a push from fans and jazz lovers in general to get it to that finish line. That’s why Klampanis has turned to crowdfunding via Kickstarter to raise $20,000 needed to make this a reality.

Make a pledge toward Klampanis’ latest recording project here. The campaign ends on May 5th 2019, so please don’t wait to chip in.
